Rare and Strategic Minerals

Venezuela has significant deposits of rare and strategic minerals. These include:
– Gold, diamonds, and iron ore
– Coltan (columbite-tantalite), referred to as Venezuela’s “blue gold” (Oro Azul). Coltan is critical for electronics manufacturing
– Uranium, coal, bauxite, nickel, and various industrial minerals

China’s Interest in the Oil

Venezuelan oil, especially from the Orinoco Belt, is known to have high sulfur content, typically between 4% and 6% sulfur, making it “sour” crude. This extra-heavy and sour crude also contains high levels of nitrogen and other contaminants, which complicate refining and make processing more expensive and energy-intensive compared to lighter crudes.

China does have involvement in the Caribbean region related to oil processing. Specifically, Chinese companies, including Guangdong Zhenrong Energy (GZE), have shown interest in upgrading and operating refineries in the Caribbean, notably the Isla refinery on the island of Curaçao. This refinery has strategic importance due to its potential to process heavy and extra-heavy crude oils like those from Venezuela’s Orinoco Belt.

China’s Interest in Rare Metals

China has demonstrated clear interest in Venezuela’s rare minerals, including coltan and other strategic resources seen in Chinese investment and cooperation in Venezuela’s mining and metallurgy sectors as of 2025. Venezuelan officials have signed deals with Chinese companies to modernize and develop mining projects, including those related to coltan, gold, and bauxite in regions such as the Orinoco Mining Arc.
